Pre-order it now and support the completion of this unique project!
The second book by Ayala Moriel is a book which is in the works since 2005, and was planned to be published at the end of year 2020. While many hurdles were thrown at us during that year, the project is still in progress, and will be published as soon as this important work is finished, and in the best possible way - to create a book that is relevant, unique and accurate. The author is grateful for those who continue to believe in the project and that have and will support its completion. This book is created for you.
This comprehensive dictionary of raw materials of natural perfumery is meant to serve as a continuation of Ayala Moriel's first book, "Foundation of Natural Perfumery" (2014). Perfumers and students alike will benefit from condensed resource covering over 200 different plant species (and some mineral and animal materials) - and the raw materials for perfumery and incense which are derived from them - which amount to close to 400 different botanical extracts and preparations, presenting different colours and shades for the natural perfumer's palette. Each plant will receive a unique treatment showcasing its organoleptic properties, in Ayala's unique language which is both poetic and informative; as well as quick reference for how it can be used in perfume compositions. Some plants which are particularly important for the trade will receive wider coverage entailing their cultural and historical significance as well as healing or therapeutic properties whenever applicable. In some cases, comparison between different varietals or terroirs will be also addressed.
Ayala Moriel is a master perfumer and a leader in contemporary natural perfumery. In 2001 she began composing inspired botanical perfumes for her eponymous brand, which have become world-renowned for their artistry, storytelling and integrity. A passionate advocate for sensory education, she shares her knowledge and expertise through her Foundation of Natural Perfumery professional program, private classes, workshops, and her poetic SmellyBlog. She divides her time between the West Coast and the Western Galilee.

Tree of Life incense is inspired by my beloved, one-legged teacher: an ancient Eastern Plane Tree that grows in Kziv Creek. The tree is rooted in the pure running water, and has a unique quality of roots and branches joining or merging together, creating imaginative shapes and cavities in the tree formation.
Incense cones, hand-rolled in the traditional technique, made from finely ground botanicals, including local aromatics that were ethically foraged: fallen leaves and outer bark that I found in the creek. The aroma is unique, reminiscent of the sweet smell of Kziv Creek, and also burning leaves. It was created in two different formats: Incense cones (bound with natural gums or wood bark. No saltpetre or charcoal used in these cones); and a Kyphi-style loose incense blend, bound with local organic honey, wine and raisins.
No saltpetre or charcoal used in these cones. Cones are generally faster burning than a thick joss stick (range of burning time may be from 7-15min, and produce more smoke. They are more convenient to burn while traveling and outdoors, and they stand on their own base, and therefore don't really require special equipment or vessels.
Burning instruction: Prepare a heat-proof vessel, on a sturdy surface away from flammables and out of reach of children and animals. To prevent scorch marks, it is recommended that you layer some sand, earth or ash on the vessel. Place the cone and light the tip of it, and allow the flame to extinguish. Because these are handmade cones, each has a different burning times.
Kyphi-style should be burned on a charcoal in a designated vessel, or in a bowl filled with sand.
Tree of Life Incense cones come in a box containing a dozen cones.
Tree of Life kyphi comes in a glass jar and can be either burnt on hot charcoals, or placed on an incense heater for a gentler and smoke-free aroma.

Triple Goddess incense cones were handcrafted with reverence to all phases of the moon, and all facets of womanhood - Maiden/Mother/Crone, the birth, pregnancy and softening of the age of wisdom. This incense is created with women's healing in mind, for all stages of life, but especially for times of transition, large and small - be it birth, loss or the monthly bleeding time.
Triple Goddess incense cones were conceived on a a Full Moon Monday and are infused with energy that is meant to aid and assist women and girls during the time of bleeding and any other challenges faced by Womanity.
Incense resins of the three colours representing the Life-Death-Life cycle were chosen lovingly for this blend: Frankincense and White Copal for the Maiden; Dragon's Blood for Motherhood, Bleeding and the "Fertile" years; and Black Copal, Bdellium and Myrrh for the wisdom of the Crone. These were all manually ground with mortar and pestle, and mixed with finely powdered red and white sandalwood for an even burn of mysteriously fragrant smoke.
* This incense is also available in a loose-incense, resin-based blend, in which all these colours are visible.

Turtle Island Kyphi is a contemporary interpretation of Ancient Egyptian Kyphi recipes, using wildly foraged botanicals and resins from across Canada. Healing plants and vibrant vegetation and unusual botanicals were used: spruce pitch, balsam poplar buds, Western Redcedar, fir and spruce needle tips, sagebrush, white sage, sweetgrass and sacred tobacco. The result is a forest kyphi that has the life-giving energy of the seven directions and is meant to heal and connect us and the Earth.
The majority of the ingredients were foraged by myself and friends in Golden Ears park in British Columbia, as well as in Ontario and Quebec. Each raw material was ground separately, then they are all compounded together in a mixture of raisins soaked in organic white wine and wild honey. This not only binds together the ingredients but also creates an alchemical process that truly transforms the aroma of the incense and creates a heavenly smoke when burnt on a charcoal. It can also be used by placing on an aromatherapy diffuser (place on a piece of aluminum foil to prevent it from sticking to your diffuser).
