Palas Athena, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom and War may seem like a far fetched inspiration for what is a very Indian fragrance. But if you smelled Palas Athena with its rich champaca notes, you will understand why.

Both potent, powerful, gentle and warm - this perfume was such a natural fit for an incense blend that I couldn't resist the challenge of turning it into an incense. And this is my first time creating with some unusual traditional Indian materials little known in the West, and very tricky (and sticky!) to work with. It may not be perfect yet, but I'm pleased enough with the result to want to share it with you.

Palas Athena Incense cones and masala sticks are made in the traditional Indian way, and hand-rolled from unique botancials - resins, woods and spices that are unique to Indian incense crafting. This unique blend of exotic woods, spices, resins and flowers is very much an homage to the famous Nag Champa type of incense that is immensely popular but has long been tempered with synthetic additions.

from finely ground botanicals such as sandalwood, agar wood, spices, resins and herbs, and bound with natural gums or wood bark. No saltpetre or synthetic fillers are used in this incense.

Each box contains a dozen cones, or masala sticks.

Palo Santo has a strong, affirmative presence, and on its own there is a certain sharpness to its resinous-woody-balsamic character. In this special incense blend, I have attempted to soften its rough edges, and bring forth a new quality I found in it while meditating on the wood alone: the thick smoke from smudging creates a feeling of being hugged from the inside, and a profound sense of being supported and cared for. 
It is paired with sandalwood, vanilla, tonka bean, cinnamon and and a unique combination of wood binders that gives it a soft, sweet smoke and creates a warm, cozy feeling that will make your home feel cozy and protected. 

Palo Santo is a sacred tree that grows in the Rainforests of Central and South America, where it has been used for time immemorial in smudging ceremonies and healing rituals. It is grounding, balancing, promotes mental health as it is both uplifting, energizing and protective. Palo Santo develops the essential oils and resin that give it its unique perfume only after the tree dies down, teaching us that even after death, separation and endings there is hope for beauty and strength.

Palo Santo incense cones are hand-rolled in the traditional East-Indian method, made only from finely ground botanicals: Palo santo wood, sandalwood, cinnamon, vanilla and tonka bean, and bound with natural gums or wood bark. No saltpetre or charcoal used in these cones.

Ayala Moriel creates Custom Perfumes – signature perfumes, one of a kind natural fragrances especially designed for you. To perfectly match your fragrance needs and personality and express it through perfume, we start with an initial and fun Fragrance Questionnaire, and let you experience the scents that best suit your profile. A more detailed interview is to follow, in which you will experience the precious building blocks of natural perfumery in person at the studio, and will select with the perfumer the essences for your Custom Perfume.

Once we receive your answers, Ayala Moriel will create your custom perfume, which will be ready within 4 weeks, and will mail you a sample. If you like it as is, we will bottle the rest of the perfume and send it along! 

However, if you wish to "tweak" it, you can request up to two more adjustments at no additional cost. The full process usually takes between 6-10 weeks. Additional changes (after 3 samples have been mailed to you) will be billed at $300 per formulae adjustment. Once completed – your perfume will be presented to you in a 15mL EDP (splash/spray), and 3 roll-on oil parfums for travel. 

Your formula is kept on file for seven years and will be only produced on your request exclusively. However, if you haven't made any re-orders in seven years, we reserve the right to use the formula as per our discretion. Re-ordering minimums: $220 per 15mL bottle, or $330 for 3 5mL roll-ons (oil based). 

Many of our clients choose to create their custom fragrance remotely, by simply answering the questionnaire and receiving samples in the mail until the perfume is to their liking.

Learn how to make your own natural perfume! In this workshop, you will design and create your own personal perfume from precious botanical essences in a base of undenatured alcohol. By the end of the workshop, you will have made a perfume to take home with you, beautifully packaged in a spray bottle. We will keep the formulas on file so when you run out we can make it again for you!
