Sadly, this "comic strip" showcases the poignant truth for many that survive the battles of wars. Their bodies may be intact, but their spirits are broken. And we walk right past them and disregard them as homeless/addict/crazy person, judging them for being a "burden on society" and for their addiction to various soothing substances.
This is also true for veterans of other wars - abused children, rape survivors, battered women and those who survived the residential schools, whom not always are able to pick up the pieces and lead a peaceful and productive life after such harsh experiences.
Instead of helping those who are suffering and are in pain, we intensify their suffering by marginalizing them in our society. Rather than being judgemental and believing that they brought their own misfortune upon themselves - let's find compassion and ways that we can lessen their suffering.
There is so much healing that needs to be done in our society. Starting with emotional self-awareness and compassionate curiosity.
