Hanami
Perfume In A Poem, March 2008: 15 perfumers were invited to interpret the poem above. Hanami is my contribution to the project, published on Memory & Desire blog.
As I was reading the poem, I envisioned a perfume that is subtle and urbane: flowers and dusty dirt. The kind of dirt I wash from my hair after commuting back from work on the Metro, clothes and skin contaminated with the lives of strangers and passers by. And for a moment I give away a part of myself just to return back home…
I want this perfume to randomly create an ever-changing, estranged impression on the beings that weave in and out of its presence… And the notes I chose to spell this emotional haiku with are:
My challenge was creating a dusty, metallic urbane landscape using botanical elements. Cabreuva, siamwood and cassie create the metallic cool scent of wet train tracks. Vetiver and bakul attar contribute to the dry and dusty urbanity. Against this is the cheerful, almost overly pretty theme of cherry blossoms portrayed by an accord of magnolia, pink lotus, tonka bean and vanilla.
The perfume is accompanied by a postcard-print of an original photo that inspired it.
